did they hear our cry

Did Rihanna's people hear our call out to get this song out asap...
It needs to dominate summer more than 'Umbrella' ...
Is it really directed By RiRi herself?
Can we hope and pray this is the european second single!?

Normal service resumes

KT Tunstall, 'Hold On'

Seeing as how the Prince review got bumped for Girl's Aloud and the last days posts have been centred around them its time to look ahead to the other musical outpourings of the day,

This is a nice addition to KT's other stuff but nothing groundbreaking i'd say. After a year of hearing nothin more than Winehouse and Allen representing ladies with a voice and good songs its nice to have KT back as a popstar who truly lets her music talk and doesn't breathe soundbites.

'Sexy! No No No... Lyrics?

Saturday Review: 'Sexy! No No No...'

Girl's Aloud, 'Sexy! No No No...'
There's only one story dominating today's world of pop...
The after school rush has seemingly put a halt to popjustice's forum, as Girls Aloud fans: decide where this ranks in the Aloud cannon, madly try to decipher the lyrics, and figure out where Sarah Harding sings on this track.
After only 17 plays and counting here's my view already.
This song isn't as immediate as most of the Girl's previous tracks, seemingly because the vocals are so layered, and covered by an immense wall of sound, that its hard to figure out the lyrics. I wonder if this is where the title comes from with the 'No No No' being the most easily singalong able part... along with the sexy! at 1.27 and the intermittant woo woos- although for me they slip in and out between listens.
While this may seem to be its flaw, its also wherein lies its charm. Every time i listen i hear different lines and different aspects of the song. Critically there is no hook. Its catchy and draws you in but its as radical as 'Sexyback', and beats hands down 'Biology' for daring to break the pop mould in ways only wet dreamed about.
The Girls, and perhaps here more importantly their producers: the oft lauded Xenomania, deserve full respect this time for this track. Too often our love of pop hyperbole heralds Xenomania as the stardust that can make any pop dud sparkle, but here they truly prove their inventive worth.
Maybe my copy isnt the full single, because the structure seems like we could go ten more rounds of this. Not long past the 3minute mark the song cuts out leaving us wanting more. Maybe thats its beauty, it does feel like both promo wise and possibly on the album that this is the 3minute foreplay leading into a fresh sound that seems to revel in the harder and darker themes that we've only glimpsed from the Girls before.

A new sound

Girls Aloud, 'Sexy!...NO NO NO'

If u want to hear a new song... before u go and buy it in the shops to support one of the UK's best pop acts ... then click here.

Its by Girl's aloud.

Its pointless writng anything here because you've all gone to listen aint ya...

and my winner is...

Jamelia, 'Beware of the Dog'

Dragging this out all week has finally payed off as my blog has reached a hundred views on average a day! hurrah for hyperbole. By now you all should've work out I'm supporting Jamelia.
If all this anticipation has u wetting yourself then here is the winning video...

I'd give this lady £20 because... as she sung on her first single shes all about the money and needs to be a bigger superstar than recent sales would suggest. oh lets get retro.

I had Jamelia's album for a while and didn't listen to it. So in January i discovered 'Beware of the Dog' and its still a great track that should've been number one longer than that wannabe with an unhealthy fetish for her 'Umbrella'. Jamelia has never been my favourite popstar but after the lacklustre acclaim for her recent album, which i had by then discovered to be one of my favourites along with the shoddy treatment from Parlophone I'm now championing this underdog.

Parlophone's lack of promotion for 'No More' led Jamelia to walk away from her recording contract. After ditching All Saints too does Parlophone really seem like the ideal home for our beloved pop chanteuse Siobhan? It'd be a crime if Jamelia's pop career ended without her winning this £20, and it may even help fund her own label from which can spurt new musics.

This song is my winner because it has throbbing beats to strut down Shinsaibashi with, a catchy sample like-homage to 'Depeche Mode's 'Personal Jesus'. 'Reach out and touch...' and it also has lyrics from Karen Poole, one half of Alisha's Attic who taught me to love pop music. (who Ive coincidentally just found out also wrote a bit of Song for Mutya?!)

All in all this is a winner, judges consider yourself implored.

popstarz the rivals

Following our recent rant, that tried to clarify our recent switch in opinion for Mika, and then this comment by Patrick Wolf which kinda helped our point... there now follows a talking point in the same vein... starring:

Wolf and Mika- courtesy of Perez.

"Mika is a twat [...] and what I meant was Please lets put an end to over marketed, expensive heartless tacky rubbish, autotune, airbrush, should i market myself to look OUTRAGEOUS and kooky or would it be easier if I sold records by playing safe and serene and for the family to save more record sales. Cliff Richard. Enrique Iglesias. mutton dressed as lamb."

I'm not sure i really get Wolf's point here.
If this was a comment regarding sexuality...
that one chooses to acknowledge the queer diversity of their love life -wolf
and one chooses to keep mum- mika
then yes maybe Mika appears to be more marketed to capitalise on an audience with no desire to have sexual topics thrust upon them when all they want to do is listen to pop.
However, I find both guys to be annoyingly marketed to ramp up their quirkiness... they are after all both an act, with fashions and opinions and lyrics designed to get us all talking- and then maybe even buying and listening.
I don't think Mika can really be accused of playing safe and serene, its nothing so clear cut. It's more like Mika's tightrope walking along both sides trying to satisfy mums and kids and retain some sexual quirky allure...both sides of which i feel are too heavily self aware.
I'm also not sure of the other references to other popstars...and so from one incoherent ramble to another... adieu.

Round Two- Mika
for so far being less of an opportunistic diva and not replying

Dugfly

Dougie from some band will have the honour of having the same haircut as me when i go get mine done at my next available oppurtunity.

Blog envy...

Popjustice have heard the new Girls Aloud track and their comment make the anticipation so much more... and then Moyles will play it tomorrow morning which is surely one way to force gays to listen to his homophobic outbursts.

If i was home id be adamant id wait for Scott Mills to play it, but as im 50 days from England ill just wait till some kind person sends it to the online.

£10 for Winehouse

Amy Winehouse, 'Rehab'

Lets give her something to moan about... i only listen to 'Rehab' from her album. it is a great song. i have no inclination to see if this is the only song of hers i will like. but I'm guessing this song sold her a lot of albums. and would be a good song sung by whoever.
not that Winehouse also doesn't have a great voice. but its just not my cup of tea. but i am willing to acknowledge from the shortlist this one deserves 2nd position.

NB, I'm also ridiculously bitter that someone (who is American, and for today's purposes, nameless) tried to suggest i listen to her because 'she's SO good', as if i didn't know who she was already. and me saying i don't like her, translated as i don't know to who you refer because my music taste is evidently inferior to you oh mighty one. not Winehouse's fault but its a sore point.

ape that butch

Cazwell, 'All Over My Face'

Im having mixed feelings about Cazwell. I liked some of his records and while they'e quite dancey i thort he was gonna be pseudo legitmate queer hiphop star. but seeing his videos hes much more of a club boy with an act... and whereas his friends drag it up he apes the butch.

how far can u shoot one of those?

Shiny Toy Gun's, 'Don't Cry Out'

Not my favourite song from there album, ladies vocal grates on me a little, but listening to their music again fills a nice void till something good this way comes...

Thursday 19 July 2007

The song that should have won...

All Saint's, 'Rock Steady', Studio 1

A most significant choice...this reunion better than that of either the Spice Girls or TakeThat, a great album, good single choice and cool as snowflakes video...
A political choice... a vote for the Saints would be a finger to parlophone who dropped its resigned girl band after one single...oh that it were panto season- oh hell---booo hiss
A nice thing... to have on Shazney's CV for when she with/without the girls goes contract hunting.
A personal choice... i heard this song on perez, on my roomates computer when mine broke and i was all alone in japan, without the internet it was like being trapped in the big brother house.. final week... with Gerry! in so far as there were plenty of inane stories and no outisde contact. This song is my favourite released single by a British artist of the last 12months.

Dr's orders

Jack Savoretti, 'Dr. Frankenstein' Between the Minds

this is the most immediate song from his album and the one i feel for most... this live version is even sweeter...

pegging by numbers

Dragonette, 'Take It Like A Man', Galore

So many guys clearly need a little encouragement to take it like a man, and so here comes Dragonette to do just that. This video starts fo so well but I can't help feeling some final pay off has been edited out? maybe thats just wishful thinking.
I can't help but think that PopJustice is restraining itself over hyping this release after previous promotion seemngly jinxed things. So once more I'll give the albums some spins it deserves and try and muster up enough to write somthing on it.

...and the fiver goes to...

Girls Aloud, 'Somthing Kinda Oooh!'

It would be a nice way to kick start the sales of their new single, which coincides with the judging date for the 2007 popjustice music prize. The girls have -to be fair- won this thing 3times allready. If they win it kinda guarentees "Sexy! No No No..." will either be up for it and win next year... or will be bypassed to give the Girls a break from this relentlessly heavy process of winning £20- so in actual fact a win for them is a guarentee of nothing.

Myspace to hypothesise

My anticipated* opinion on the £20 popjustice music prize...

Siobhan and Sophie, much as I love them both, they are represented here by debut singles from great albums, thus the songs aren't even the best from each respective artiste never mind best song of the year... reluctantly null points

Luciana, looks promising but apart from popjustice pushing her music she fails to make an impact on me so far- well i live in japan so maybe shes famous/worthy back home! i don't know?...not looking good

Ronson, Harris and Nash... all leave me cold... cold i tell you (i do try and not post anything negative on here so should keep quiet on this... frigid menage et trois)

Booty Love, again i don't get over here, maybe in a club id be lapping it up but.. Japanese linedancers sadly haven't taken to them.

Robbie, its nice to support albums when they're underrated but after being overrated for so long Robbie's career stalling... isn't anything to use a protest vote for.

Roisin, on the other hand is worth it... but her song is new will i still love it this time next year... and will her album give us better songs... I'm holding out for more.

Check back soon to find out who I'd give £5 to...

*It's actually only an hour since i launched the news but its after midnight here so I'm in tomorrow now. its all very Dr Who.

Glory hole

Natalie Imbruglia, 'Glorious'

Her first album is immense still to this day; this song... well it might be a grower.

..but it'll never be torn.

cheers m'dears electroqueers

Top Blog electroqueer has links that take you to magical places where you can listen to samples of Mr Darren Hayes new album. so check it all out and wear your most suitable 'cream your jeans' pants. Its an Ozzie phrase as i understand it... but so is 'show us your growler love'. i hope its not offensive to Mr Hayes and his fellow antipodeans.
I'm favouring the slightly more uptempo second cd but no doubt this will chnage once i finally get my nice new shiny and smells like new mp3 copy.

in other news...

The Mercury Music prize shortlist is announced to less than enthralled fanfare...
Arctic Monkeys' Favourite Worst Nightmare
Basquiat Strings featuring Seb Rochford's Basquiat Strings
Bat for Lashes' Fur & Gold

Dizzee Rascal's Maths & English
Jamie T's Panic Prevention
Klaxons' Myths of the Near Future
Maps' We Can Create
New Young Pony Club's Fantastic Playroom
Fionn Regan's The End of History
The View's Hats Off to the Buskers
Amy Winehouse's Back to Black
The Young Knives' Voices of Animals and Men

Im a bit annoyed i dont know any of them, of course i know the names of Arcitc Monkeys/ Dizzee Rascal and Amy Winehouse, but dont listen to their albums and the rest i haven't heard of. I was kinda hoping it'd be Patrick Wolf, Sia and Siobhan Donaghy.

Oh actually i do love the Klaxon's it's allways on in Wego and seems a suitable soundtrack to those new rave clothes that japanese kids are eating up.

everybody point at popjustice (and then click)

Boing... all eyes are on popjustice today as it announced the shortlist for the 2007 £20 music prize.

Here is the Shortlist...

'Acceptable In The 80s'
'Rehab'
'Beware Of The Dog'
'Catch You'
-Sophie Ellis-Bextor
'Don't Give It Up'
-Siobhan Donaghy
'Foundations'
-Kate Nash
'Overpowered'
-Roisin Murphy
'She's Madonna'
-Booty Luv
'Something Kinda Oooh'
-Girls Aloud
'Stop Me'
-Mark Ronson
'Yeah Yeah'
What follows are my opinions on these choices. Check back soon -probably on a day when i have little else to post- so maybe even tomorrow, to see to whom i refer to when I say...
... reluctantly null points
...not looking good
... frigid menage et trois
... Japanese linedancers sadly haven't taken to them.
... isn't anything to use a protest vote for.
... I'm holding out for more.

Oh the excitement!

Ri Ri

Apparently people are saying Kate Nash and Fergie almost toppled Rihanna in the last few weeks, truth is she still can't be beat.
9 weeks on Rihanna is selling less and less, down to 23,092 copies sold. This is the lowest sales figure of a number one this year, (not quite as bad as Orson's 17,000 last year) but to suggest the number two records are big hitters themselves is a mistake.
If she lasts another week she bests Gnarls Barkely's record as longest number one this century. hehe sounds suitably hyperbolic.
while it would be unfair on the other chart botherers, a surprise release of a 'Don't Stop the Music' video and simultaneous itunes release could ensure she's number one next week albeit with a different track.

5ive boys in a band

Jesse McCartney, 'Right Where You Want Me'

I heard this track in the disney channel on my flights to and from thailand...and he has great hair...so yeh he made it into the band.

Retro Tuesday: Lene Marlin

Lene Marlin, Lost in a Moment

Last weekend we reviewed Rihanna's album, and tucked away in the credits for the final song, is one L.Marlin. Its a co-write with Stargate her producers on her most recent and best album; Lost in a Moment.

Her first album is great, her second i have yet to discover properly, but this year ive had her third on constantly and it always amazes me. Check out her latest single, providing vocals for the Lovebugs on thier track 'Avalon'.

Lene is a truly great popstar. She sings the most heartbreaking lyrics in the guise of the cathciest little ditties. Her voice is capable of great things but its softness makes up for the powerhouse displays our American pop stars think necessary to convey emotion. Witness the video for 'How would it feel', it details the end of a reltionship with some cutting lyrics but a sublimly catchy chorus.

Lene has also been making waves in Asia, and this video is for the bonus track...

taking our advice

"Hey guys, as you may know, I have a new song posted called "Detox"; an ode to a certain idol of mine who really needs to shape up and reclaim her throne. The music was composed by Bloodshy (of Bloodshy and Avant, who produced Toxic), and the lyrics are pretty self-explanatory.
Now for the contest part; I am looking for someone to help me create a simple youtube video for the song. You can use whatever footage you want for it, any inspiration, any pics of said certain fallen pop icon being very un-pop-icon-y, lol.The winner will get the top spot on my myspace friends, AS WELL AS a high quality mp3 of any song of his or her choosing from my myspace page :)Thanks for all the support as of late guys, the page has been getting around 15,000-17,000 plays a day, and it is all thanks to you!Love you all"---Simon Curtis

Still to come...in '07

Pseudo-exclusivly, we can reveal that the new Girls Aloud single 'Sexy! No No No' will be released on 3rd September. (video filmed this week and album in november) It would be highly un-hyperbolic of us to not scream with delight at such an ostentatious title. We will however restrain ourselves until we hear the track. But to be honest it has felt like such a long wait that were gonna love it whatever it sounds like.

I think this year we have done pretty well with some great pop music. and we still have a whole host of highly anticipated albums on the horizon...most of em vying for chartspace at the end of the year.

Madonna, with Timberlake and Timbaland oh my, so the obvious question is: will she be the new Nelly? Is Madonna so transparent as to be hoping for a similar sound to Loose? Will it be out by xmas? wot wont she do to publicise this? is it divorce time?
Kylie: will it be better than the leaks? will all those rumoured producers and hookups really pan out? will there be enoguh weeks in the future chart to squeeze in a number one album from her?

Sugababes: If Amelle's writing for Mut whos writing for this? Are they too working with Timbaland? Is Keisha also working on solo projects? Is Amella taking lead? Will Heidi sing the middle eight? Will they fuck for tracks with Dallas Austin? Will things spiral out of control with William Orbit? Will they break America, and will it be any good?

Darren Hayes, This Delicate Thing We've made, Released 20/08/07 No doubt this double album will be great, but at 25 tracks will it be an early xmas present or too big to fit in our stocking?
Britney Spears: Apparently the first singles due the same week as The Aloud but will this project ever see the light of day? will she pick a good damn name for it? we all want this to succeed but in just a few years it seems pop has grown up and releasing a mediocre album with a few singles wont cut it this time B. who hasnt worked on this and who hasnt been stockpiling tracks waiting for this release. in the meantime check out this paen to Miss Spears... reintroducing Simon Curtis- Detox

Tristram Paddy Bitter

Thomas Tantrum, 'Pshandy'

I love the fairytale theme, i love this girls voice, i love the artistic interpretation, i love that finally i might have found someone good one myspace i like them... and u might too...who knows...you decide.

Speaking for itself

Anon 'LDN is a victim'

spot the pastiche... love the Love City Groove shout out

wolfwhistle

Patrick Wolf, 'The Magic Position', The Magic Position

I love Patrick, but really to be honest i love him because of this one song...and video. This is probably as poppy as he will ever get, but if he ever gets bored of being so cleverly experimental hed make a brilliant pop-poster-boy...

Patrick on Mika...

"In a way, I find it slightly cowardly"Though Wolf bristles at labels, he readily admits to relationships with both men and women. “We’re living in more liberated times than we were 10 or 20 years ago, but it’s still very tough in many parts of the world. There are still kids being beaten up, committing suicide. In Egypt, if a boy kisses another boy, they get hanged. You make the choice whether you want to be a political artist or an entertainer, or somebody who’s very aware. Obviously, [Mika] belongs to a canon of musicians that are entertainers.”

One Good Turn

Simon Curtis, 'Detox'

My blog has only had 3 comments so far... but number 3 was from Simon Curtis! so of course id sooner or later repay the favour and mention his great music some more...
So i click on his myspace and stumbled upon...This.
This needs someone better adapted than me to make a quick video to be placed on youtube... it needs mailing to perezhilton as of right now...it needs to get this guy noticed, signed, and then in the charts by the end of the season.
It's not a diss song... its not a cover...but it is a fans reaction to Britney's bad year and says what we all feel during this anticipatory time waiting for her next single. Simon utilises Britney's lyrics but this song fits so well with the other tracks hes posted that its in no way a novelty record, it shows the kind of promotions savvy that marks this guy as a future outstanding popstar.
